- The film is based on the life story of the Bolshevik political commissar Furmanov, who fought alongside Chapayev during the Civil War in Russia (1918-1922). Vassilii Ivanovich Chapayev is a Red Army hero. This illiterate head of a cavalry unit is portrayed as a protector of the common folk and a brave soldier, a menace to the evil White Army.
