Contents/Summary

Summary
Politics of the Heart is a moving portrait of lesbian and gay families who re-shaped the cultural and political landscape of Québec by fighting for recognition of their relationships, families and homoparental rights. In December 1977, Québec became the first Canadian province to extend human rights protection to gays and lesbians under its charter of human rights. The documentary traces the gradual politicization of local gay and lesbian communities and organizations over the next 15 years, and highlights their hard-won legal and political battles. The film pays particular attention to The Civil Union Bill (Bill 84), which passed unanimously in the Québec National Assembly in June 2002. The bill extends full rights to gay and lesbian parents and their children, giving Québec the most progressive laws in the world for homoparental families. Politics of the Heart is a penetrating look into the history of queer struggle and the individuals and organizations that sought to win recognition and rights for lesbian and gay families.
