Contents/Summary

Summary
The Free Voice of Egypt is the coming-of-age story of world-famous writer and Egyptian feminist Nawal El Saadawi. We leave the intimate setting of her "writer's refuge" above the roofs of Cairo and are taken out to the village in which Nawal was born, where she too had to endure the terrible experience of genital mutilation. El Saadawi’s striking biography encompasses more than eight decades of contemporary Egyptian history outliving dramatic social and political ruptures. Original quotations from Nawal El Saadawi’s autobiographical works are woven into the documentary creating a vivid dramaturgical interplay between past and present.
