Istanbul’s infamous Tarlabaşı neighborhood is going through extensive urban renewal, with whole blocks of the historical residential buildings razed to make space for new developments. As a part of Beyoğlu’s colorful history is turned into rubble, the inhabitants of Tarlabaşı struggle to adapt to their rapidly changing environment. One of them is ‘Mustafa from Adana’, a wastepicker with a cloak-and-dagger history reminiscent of the Turkish movie ‘Eşkiya‘ (Bandit) from 1996 that tells the story of Baran, who comes to Istanbul after serving his prison sentence, only to find his fate in Tarlabaşı. The film follows Mustafa as he attempts to radically change his life while Tarlabaşı radically changes around him.
