Contents/Summary

Summary
This montage film is constructed solely of archival footage: of Hungarian newsreels, commercials and short films from the 1960s and 1970s. Instead of elaborating on the historical and political events of the capital city of Hungary, the film focuses on the everyday life and the 'soul' of the city. Where and what the people ate, how they dressed, where they went out. It's urban history at its best, showing the stories of civilians in Budapest. The film consists of five episodes: Streets of Budapest; Apartments of Budapest; Bistros of Budapest; Fashion in Budapest and Cars in Budapest, and is of course a subjective film. It reflects the preferences of the editors and the film director. The source material, the original films speak volumes of the filmmaking traditions of the Kadar regime: the cinematography, the editing, and above all the narration. They bear the stylistic hallmarks of the era, and despite the curating and re-editing by the director, Budapest Retro preserves the spirit of the 1960s and 1970s.
