Contents/Summary

Summary
Meghalaya is a state in northeast India where local people rejoice when a girl is born, the houses even bear the names of women. Khatduhs are the youngest daughters of Khasi matrilineal clans from Meghalaya, where the lineage is from the mother, but their importance is diminishing. Economic development has fueled migration and the voices of dissent against Matriliny are becoming louder. Given the scenario 'Are They Better Off?' is an exposition of Matriliny in Meghalaya and it’s socio-political complexities, contextualized by the status of women in India generally. We are introduced to three women; Hulda Kynta, 52, Selinda Kharbuki, 29 and Jubelee Kharmujai, 23, who reveal the customs and traditions of their Khasi matrilineal society as we journey to Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, to celebrate Christmas with them.
