- Summary
- "In February 1966 the outstanding Soviet literary critic Andrey Sinyavsky and his friend Yuli Daniel, a well known translator, were sentenced to forced labour at a sensational trial in Moscow for having published abroad, under their pen names Abram Tertz and Nicolai Arzhak, works which were alleged to be slanderous and subversive.
Access to the courtroom was severely restricted and the proceedings received only scant and one-sided treatment in the Soviet press, but in the months after the trial a full verbatim record of what took place on court began to circulate clandestinely in the Soviet Union. A copy of this record reached the West, by undisclosed channels, and is the central feature of this book which also includes the texts of some remarkable appeals and protests which have been made by Soviet intellectuals in an unprecedented display of solidarity with their two condemned colleagues. None of these documents, such as a plea to the Soviet Government signed by sixty-three Soviet writers and ab open letter from Lidia Chukovskaya, have been published in the Soviet Union"--publisher
