Summary
This historical epic is set in the forbidding borderline between the Ottoman and Venetian Empires during the 1750s. The story revolves around two brothers – wildly tempered Petar and thoughtful Ivan who both in their youth witness the savage murder of their parents by a merciless Venetian captain. Years later, after they have been separated by destiny, Petar has become a fearsome horseman in the service of that very same Venetian captain, while Ivan has taken his vows as an Orthodox priest. Respected for his courage and heroics, Petar makes a fatal mistake and turns the Venetian forces against him. He escapes across the border to a local Ottoman pasha, apparently converts to Islam and falls in love with the pasha’s beautiful daughter Lejla. Their illicit love-affair sets the stage for a final conflict between the two opposing empires and world-views. After Petar kills Lejla’s suitor, Lejla runs back to the Venetians and converts to Catholicism, while the lovers plan to outplay both sides and escape to the Habsburg Empire. In their way stands a fierce final clash between the two strong forces.
