At the end of 2010, the coalition government in the United Kingdom decided to raise university fees making third-level education in the country among the most expensive in Europe. In doing so, they provoked the biggest student demonstrations seen in the country in 40 years. Social networking sites played a very large role in the organization of these demonstrations. “The Real Social Network” follows activists as they prepare to blockade universities, communicate with university management and the media, and use social networking sites for demonstrations. This documentary shows how social networking sites have radically transformed the possibilities of street protests.
