a| In India, the Reangs, who form the second largest ethnic tribal group in Tripura, cling to their traditional way of life as shifting cultivators and seek to convince their leaders about the necessity to form an autonomous district council for Reangs in Mizoram. When the request is being brought forward to then chief minister Lal Thanhawla, it meets strong opposition, which causes the already existing tensions between the two communities to escalate. A decade later, close to 35000 Reangs are refugees in Tripura, after fleeing from Mizoram due to ethnic violence. Discussions continue on how to return the Reang refugees to their native lands, but no conclusive decision has been made so far.
