a| There is an unrecognized state in the middle of Europe called Transnistria. For 21 years Igor Smirnov, the irreplaceable president, waved back from the tribunes of the capital of this self-appointed state. Although Transnistria conducts border controls and has its own army and currency, it is far from independent. In fact it is entirely dependent on alms from Russia. What is life like in a quasi-state where social dissatisfaction is increasing as a result of arbitrary authoritarian rule and disastrous economic situation? The presidential elections are coming and the opposition candidates appear on a half-finished construction site to each present a plan for how to build a proper house out of a wreckage. The fight for leadership of this invisible country quickly becomes an emotional one. Could a new president change anything?
