a| Loha Singh is a 28-year-old electrician who lives in Kanpur, a city of 3 million, which suffers from power cuts that last up to 15 hours. Renowned for his prowess, Loha is a Robin Hood figure who steals electricity and charges the rich to provide free connections in impoverished neighborhoods. In the face of day-long power-cuts, he runs illegal connections from one neighborhood to another so that homes, factories and businesses can function normally. Ritu is the first female boss, and new to the Kanpur Electricity Supply Company (KESCO); she works on a mission to eliminate powerlessness. Electricity theft accounts for nearly 30 percent of KESCO’s losses, aggravating the crisis, and Ritu has to tackle these unlawful activities. Yearly raids to remove illegal connections are met with street protests and anger. In the meantime, the lack of electricity drives people to use generators run on fossil fuels. This is choking the town, making Kanpur one of the most polluted cities in India. A picture emerges of a modern dystopia, encompassing urban decay and desperation in the lack of electricity.
