Contents/Summary
- Summary
- Modern day China in three episodes: the deceptively, idyllic Jiuxiancun in the rainy south; the apocalyptic coal mining sites of Minqin and Wusutu in the parched north; and Chongqing, the megacity on the Yangtze River. The protagonists fight their ways through the unresolved traumas of the past, manage an uncertain present, and make tentative steps into the future. In the north, an elderly couple clings to their family farm long after everyone else in the village leaves, while their son and his wife negotiate a harsh existence in one of many grim industrial zones. An ancient rice-growing village in lush Guangxi Province in the south still struggles to heal the deep wounds inflicted during the brutality of the Cultural Revolution. The final segment is a captivating glimpse of life in the modern mega-city. By reflecting on rural depopulation, the lives of workers, the traumas of the revolution, and the search for identity of different genders, the film paints a complex image of China.
