520    The Kawah Ijen volcano on the Indonesian island of Java is a major tourist attraction and an important source of income for the local population. This active volcano is rich in sulfur, which is used as a pigment and a preservative. Every day, hundreds of local sulfur miners carrying backbreaking loads and traverse treacherous terrains amidst spectacular vistas and toxic gases. The film relays the stories of four miners who risk their lives and health daily in an industry we rely on for sugar, matches and cosmetics. Drawing strength from their families and faith, they search for meaning in their daily struggles and triumphs. This visually stunning and intimate film chronicles the miners' attempts to escape the endemic poverty and lack of education that haunts their community.
