Summary
“Painted Black” tells the story of Dilaver Xhemali, a former political prisoner in communist Albania. He was imprisoned for an image he made of Enver Hoxha, the Albanian socialist leader, with half of the portrait in total black. When the communist era came to an end, having no place to go, Xhemali went to live with his brother in Elbasan. There, the new government gave him a piece of land within the Metallurgical Complex, a place poisoned by chemicals from the factories.
