a| Historical film about some of the most controversial topics in the recent history of Romania: the regime of Ion Antonescu and the coup d'etat of August 23rd 1944. The film centers on two Romanian statesmen: Ion Antonescu, a military dictator, and King Mihai, the last monarch of the country. The movie shows Antonescu's coming to power, his later arrest and execution, as well as presenting the legionaries' "uprising". At the same time, it shows the "golden times" under the King Mihai as a contrast to the ensuing Communist regime; Petru Groza is imposed as prime minister by the Soviet ambassador, Vasinski. An additional line of the plot is the arrest and death of Iuliu Maniu, the leader of the National Peasant Party, and the execution of Lucretiu Patrascanu (the "reform"-minded local Communists involved in the coup d'etat). The historical period covered in the film is roughly 1939 to 1947. Despite extensive use of archival footage, the evaluation of these events is very debatable. Film critics and historians expressed conflicting opinions on the film, ranging from accusing it of falsification of the past to praising it as a ground-breaking and long-awaited representation of crucial moments in the history of contemporary Romania.
