Contents/Summary

Summary
The Ukrainian city of Uman is the burial site of Rebbe Nachman of Breslov, one of the most important figures of Hassidism. Every year tens of thousands of pilgrims come here to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. Meanwhile, a Ukrainian far-right group erects a cross at the site of Hasidic prayers and builds a monument to Cossacks who slaughtered thousands of Jews and Poles in 1768 during a national rebellion. The film shows the tensions gradually mounting between pilgrims and local residents. When the post-communist city comes back to life thanks to its Jewish guests, the ghosts of nationalism and religious intolerance are revived, too.
