Contents/Summary
- Summary
- "I do not like to talk about it. These are bad memories…" "They were born here, they never thought they would ever leave…" "it was a topsy-turvy world… Ordinary people could do nothing. …" "We were quite close friends but still, they never told me anything about what had happened to them over there. I did not ask, they did not say…" Ghetto, brick factory, train station, mass graves - the neighbors of the Jewish inhabitants of the small Hungarian town of Kőszeg take us along the streets of their town, into the houses and shops, passing by the shut down synagogue that all bear witness to the fates of its former owners. What did the Hungarians of Kőszeg do while their neighbors were rounded up for deportation, forced labor at the local brick factory and eventual death? How and what do they remember and say today about that time? What did the bystanders see and what do they believe they saw happening in their community during the last days of WWII? And why do they feel compelled to dispel allusions to their complicity?
