Contents/Summary

Summary
This propaganda film was produced by the Film Studio of the Hungarian Ministry of Interior in 1958. The filmmakers used some well selected segments of the footage shot at the Imre Nagy show trial in 1958 as well as excerpts from other films and still images of the revolution. The narration of the film, in line with the hard core Stalinist narrative authored by Sándor Rajnai, interprets the revolution as counter revolution and its leaders as criminal traitors of the nation. Eventually, the film was never publicly screened, and the raw material of the trial proceedings as well as the other edited version were destroyed in 1961. The surviving 70-minute version was added to the classified court records and was only discovered in 1989, during retrial. While it was never broadcast on television, excerpts from it were used in many documentaries, and a number of illegal copies circulated on VHS cassettes. The English subtitles were prepared by OSA at CEU for a special screening to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the execution of Imre Nagy and his fellow martyrs.
