The filmmakers used some well selected segments of the footage shot at the Imre Nagy show trial in 1958 as well as excerpts from other films and still images of the revolution. The narration of the film, in line with the hard core Stalinist narrative authored by Sándor Rajnai, interprets the revolution as counter revolution and its leaders as criminal traitors of the nation. Eventually, the film was never publicly screened, and the raw material of the trial proceedings as well as the other edited version were destroyed in 1961. The surviving 70-minute version was added to the classified court records and was only discovered in 1989, during retrial. While it was never broadcast on television, excerpts from it were used in many documentaries, and a number of illegal copies circulated on VHS cassettes.
