- Summary
- The first film of a series of two portrays life( the second documentary is called "Old Ibrahim's World") in the Pomak village of Breznitsa (South Bulgaria) focussing on female labour, processes of re-islamization after the downfall for communism and growing western influences. Taking the example of the muslim mother Zeyneb with her family and that of young western-oriented Fidanka these antagonistic processes in contemporary Pomak society are described.Zeyneb is a traditional middle-aged woman involved in the education and marriage of her three daughters. The dowry symbolizes the enduring link between the generations. Zeyneb feels very much at ease in her family setting and in her community. In contrast, Fidanka, the second protagonist is oriented towards modernity. Freed from tradional constraints by her past participation in the socialist youth movement, she is searchin for a more open and better life. She realizes the hopelessness of her postion as a liberated woman in a traditional cultural environment. Escaping to the West becomes her life goal. This, however, proves to be an impossible task. Wheat is she going to do? Is there an alternative for Fidanka?
