Mateusz is an old-timer, a saddler, who finds nothing but hostility when he makes it home after years away. He is not a Jew, though the villagers brand him one and give him a hard time. They have already taken his property; now they feel guilty about the death of his son at the end of the war, and do not want the father around. In the background we see the beginning of the communist takeover in Poland, but this is not the major focus of the film. Rather, it is Mateusz's struggle to fit in. Kolski, pace national-Catholic literature and film, presents the villagers as superficially religious brutal antisemites. 542 |fCopyright by Vision Film Distribution 655 4 Fiction films 260 Poland : |bStudio Filmowe im Karola Irzykowskiego, |c1990. 041 pol 952 |00 |10 |40 |50 |70 |8FL |990577FL |bFL |d2016-11-25 |l0 |r2016-11-25 |w2016-11-25 |yDVD-ROM 952 |00 |10 |2ddc |40 |6FL_RECORD_0728_000000000000000 |70 |8FL |9145963FL |bFL |d2019-02-21 |l0 |oFL Record 0728 |pHU_OSA_00002468.mp4 |r2021-11-04 |w2019-02-21 |yDIGIFILM |zAccess Copy, MP4 format |cAudio Visual 920 01 BY1NMle4 966 True |bHU_OSA_00002468 |cDigitally Anywhere / With Registration
