In 1971 a riot in the Attica Correctional Facility in upstate New York turned into a full-scale uprising. For four days the prison was ringed with state troopers and national guards, while the inmates held their warders hostage. In the end the prison was stormed - and 29 inmates and 10 guards died. Attica has become synonymous with brutality, poor policing and the militant mood of black Americans of the early 1970s. “Ghosts of Attica” is a film about the infamous 1970s prison rebellion as well as a chronicle of the recent efforts of inmates and guards to seek justice from the state.
