a| A comedy about ‘ne’er-do-well’ village boy Ivan Brovkin. He is not very respected by his colleagues in the collective farm: when he is sent to herd the pigs, he lets them eat the farm’s sprouts, when he drives a kolkhoz lorry, he steers it into the river. Yet when he is drafted into the army, Ivan becomes a good artilleryman and is given leave to visit his girlfriend in the village.
