a| A disturbing and moving look at life in a Youth Authority Prison in Chino, California. Broomfield and Churchill's “sequel” to Juvenile Liaison raises structural and institutional problems of the US penal system. The workings of a purportedly liberal penal institution are condemned through an intensely dramatic concentration on four of its victims, aged 17-21, ostensibly there for rehabilitation, but actually undergoing repetitive and vindictive punishment. In the process, the film presents the spectre of individual sufferings; one inmate who dramatizes his resistance specifically for the camera receives humiliating treatment which the filmmakers duly observe but cannot forestall. A raw depiction of a dehumanizing penal system that crushes the hopes and dreams of at-risk teenagers.
