Contents/Summary

Summary
The film describes the impact of a local narrow-gauge train “Ćiro” on a small Bosnian village community in the 1970s. The Mrgud family has been working for the state railways for generations and some of the most important events of their lives took place on the train: Srećko, the controller, met his future wife there and Marko, a switchman, had his youngest son born on board. But the day comes when it is necessary to close down the small unprofitable line. A pensioned track-inspector Pero is the only one who senses the murky future to come and with the last whistle of popular “Ćiro,” his hearts fails. For some time Marko and Srećko try to maintain the illusion of the train, but workers eventually appear ready to dismantle the tracks. The remaining villagers put up a fight and the story appears in a newspaper. “Ćiro” comes to Brezovi Dani once more, though only as an open-air museum exhibit. Villagers’ hopes that “Ćiro” will become a tourist attraction aiding the village economy soon prove false and Marko and Srećko can only dream about some better past.
