Bastøy is the first and only ecological prison in the world. The guards carry no weapons and there are no cells, cameras, or fences. As one prisoner explained, “compared to a closed prison this is heaven. Compared with freedom, this is still hell.” “Bastøy” exposes prison life in a humane institution.
