- The film shows the battle for Stalingrad during World War II. The war is represented by the two parallel lines - the battles taking place at the front and Stalin commanding from the Kremlin. The latter line dominates: the film contains numerous meetings of the Soviet generals with Stalin, who has a wise solution to any problem. He is thus portrayed as the genius winning the battle of Stalingrad.
