- Summary
- The story is set at the beginning of the 1990s, in a picturesque Serbian region near the Bosnian border where, despite the threat of war, the authorities plan to build a scenic tourist railway across the two republics. Luka inspects the tunnels for the grand opening and lives in a house just above the train station with his wife Jadranka, an ex opera-singer suffering from manic depression and his twenty-something son Miloš, a stupid if talented soccer player on his way to sign a big contract. When Luka learns that his son has been taken hostage by the Bosnians, a biblical solution is found: a criminal acquaintance in the Serbian army gets him his own Bosnian hostage who Luka could exchange for his son. It just happens that the hostage is a beautiful Muslim girl Sabaha who also happens to be madly in love with Luka. She immediately takes over the housekeeping of Luka’s house and gradually he falls for her. When Miloš is located in the Bosnian prison and everything is set for the exchange of prisoners, Luka finds himself torn between his affections for Miloš and his new love.
