a| Cardiac surgeon, Sergey Sukhanov, has performed over 15,000 open heart surgeries and is the star of his region and beyond. He convinced the local authorities to build a modern Cardiac Center in Perm, scheduled to be finished by mid-2000. The government allocated substantial funds for the construction of the Center, but its completion was constantly postponed. Tired of fighting regional officials, Sukhanov continued his work in an old building housing the old clinic until one day in late 2011 he received an unexpected offer from the Kremlin to participate in Vladimir Putin’s election campaign. Realizing that the government was using him, Sukhanov accepted the offer, hoping in turn to gain enough influence to complete the construction. Yet gradually, political activity became an inalienable part of his life.
