- Summary
- Balázs Pásztor, the son of a village railwayman, applied for a degree in film directing in the early 1950s, but as his father was imprisoned for a minor irregularity, he was not admitted to the college. He takes a job as a surveyor. In the course of his work, he travels many countries and gets to know many different people. These are his "universities." He befriends a Greek partisan couple who have fled their homeland, Iliász and Irini. He respects the straightforward Iliász, who often clashes with the chief engineer because of his uncompromising nature. They are working on the construction of a farm center in the Alföld during the violent TSZ era. The enraged farmers feel Iliász is playing an ambiguous game with them. During his work, Balázs comes together with gypsies and witnesses how humiliating the authorities treat them. Years later, as a director, he dedicates his first film to the memory of people he met during his struggling years.
