a| The Land Where Mammoths Slumber
a| Sergei Hudi leads a modern urban lifestyle but keeps in close contact with a number of his relatives who wander the tundra hunting, fishing, and reindeer herding, maintaining the traditions exercised by their ancestors. Switching gears between the city life and its quick tempo and the meditative quality of the tundra, he guides the viewers into the everyday life of the Nenets on the Yamal peninsula, a region in northwestern Siberia. The centuries-old way of life of the tundra inhabitants slips away faster than ever. The film is a sensitive account about how modern civilization affects the lives of the Northern indigenous people living in both the tundra and the city. Along with the invasion of technology, the Nenets maintain and preserve their culture but also adapt to the times.
