- China and Japan lived in constant confrontation with the expanding Western powers from the beginning of the 20th century. The last two Asian monarchs, Mao Zedong and Hirohito, gave radically different responses to this challenge. One country saw the solution in fascism before the war, the other in communism after the war. The totalitarian path led to tragedy in both cases.
