a| Shahriyar is a Kurdish garbage collector in Kermanshah with an obsessive passion for the written word. He loses himself in reading at the risk of forgetting the world, his family, and the demands of his job. His tastes are eclectic: he reads Jack London, Shakespeare, Dostoyevsky, and Samuel Beckett; and he also writes – obstinately filling notebooks, journals, pages and scraps of paper with love stories populated by beautiful princesses in brightly-colored costumes. He writes using every moment of peace and quiet, when his two small children are asleep. He has written many novels, but nobody wants to publish them. Like his wife, his colleagues and neighbors do not understand him. The only audience ready to follow his flights of fancy are his pigeons on the terrace; closed behind bars, they, too, are unable to reach the heavens. A manifest ambassador of forbidden hopes struggling against the dampening conformism of a society where everyone is obliged to remain in his place, Shahriyar relentlessly continues to write his stories so that one day he can "move up."
