The role of international and local NGOs was discussed following presentations by WWF International (Jasmine Bachmann) and Greenpeace (Andreas Bernstorff). At the end of the session, János Vargha (Prime Minister's Office, Hungary) gave a presentation on the politics of prevention.

Prof. Kovács talks in this interview about the departments, the programs and the courses CEU offers. She also talks about the composition of the body of students in the program and the ever increasing diversity and promotion of tolerance within the department. Interview with Josef Jařab, President and Rector of CEU between 1996-1999, about his early life and the experience of being jailed in Czechoslovakia during the communist period. The discussion revolves around the film "Lemon" for which Jařab wrote the script and which is highly influenced by the period he spent in jail. In addition, the interview touches upon history, World War II and the Cold War, but also Jařab's current life, academic work and writings.

Interview with István Teplán with questions asked by Béla Nové. The main topic of the interview is the way in which István Teplán got in touch with Soros as early as 1980s, how he cumulated education and experience and how CEU developed in the 1990s.István Teplán, one of the creators of CEU, the first international Western-style graduate school in the post-communist Central Europe, speaks about his first encounters with George Soros, the subsequent education in America and his contribution in the “California program”, as well as the first meeting of CEU in Dubrovnik in 1989. István Teplán also provides explanations on the initial idea of an international graduate school in three cities - Prague, Budapest and Warsaw.

Recording of George Soros' Commencement Speech in June 1996 delivered at the Graduation Ceremony of the Academic Year 1995-1996. In his speech, he explains and redefines the concept of Open Society not in opposition with communism as a universal closed society but, drawing on Sir Karl Popper’s writing and several economic theories, in a reconsidered manner placing the notion of tolerance, diversity, development and novelty in the center.

George Soros, CEU Founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, marks the closing of the 1994 - 1995 Academic Year through the Commencement Speech in which he provides the updated idea of what Open Society means, commenting on what Open Society means for Western democracies in comparison to Eastern democracies.

Recording of the Official Opening of the 1994-1995 Academic Year of the CEU at the Budapest City Hall with the participation of the mayor of Budapest, Gábor Demszky and the founder of CEU, George Soros. The audio-cassette contains Demszky’s speech in which he mentions the new campus of the CEU on Nador street, as well as moving the Archives Radio Free Europe, Radio Liberty and the Samizdat collection under the roof of the OSA Archive. It also contains George Soros’ Commencement Speech in which he mentions Sir Karl Popper’s death, passes his regrets for Popper not being present at CEU and elaborates on Popper’s philosophical and political ideas. A video documenting Sir Karl Popper’s visit to Prague, Czech Republic in order to receive the Honorary Doctorate from the Charles University. The video contains two short interview in which Sir Popper remembers his previous visits in the country and explains the meaning of open society in the Czech context. Speakers in the video are Dr. J. Fiala, Professor at Charles University, Dr. Cyril Höschl the Dean of Medical Faculty in Prague and George Soros, the Founder of the Central European University. Images of the former Czech President Václav Havel greeting Sir Popper appear in this short film.

Recording of CEU’s 1998/99 academic year which was officially opened in Budapest at the Museum of Applied Arts on September 17. The program commenced with a musical prélude by the Stacatto Ensemble and opening remarks by CEU Executive Vice-President István Teplán. New students, faculty and guests were then greeted by György Bazsa, Rector of Kossuth Lajos University (Debrecen, Hungary), and Michael Lake, Head of Delegation of the European Commission to Hungary. After the heads of CEU academic department and programs were introduced, István Teplán awarded Alfred Rieber with the title of “Best Professor of the Year” based on student’s voting. The alumni speaker Serge Sych (IRES ‘97) welcomed entering students and CEU President and Rector Prof. Josef Jarab delivered his opening address. The program concluded with the screening of Magna Charta Universitatum, followed by a reception in the main hall of the museum.

Recording of the meeting between Yohei Sasakawa the Chairman of The Nippon Foundation, a private, non-profit foundation established in 1962 for the purpose of carrying out philanthropic activities and Yehuda Elkana, President and Rector of CEU. The discussion revolves around the two worlds brought up by George Soros in Europe and Yohei Sasakawa in Japan. Topics covered: CEU, the Nippon Foundation and foundation-funded scholarships and fellowships, MA and PhD programs as well as human rights. One of the participants in the meeting is Vladimir Pavic from Belgrade University, Ph.D candidate at CEU and beneficiary of the Nippon Foundation funded scholarship. In the context of a conference on the issue of abortion, Associate Professor at CEU’s Political Sciences Department László Bruszt offers an interview about the role of the CEU for the intellectuals in the region. Teaching Philosophy at CEU, Professor János Kis delivers a speech about abortion. Next comes a discussion about the Department of Environmental Sciences & Policy and its multidisciplinary character with Professor Ruben Mnatsakamian. This film contains recordings of a student presenting his paper and being questioned by an evaluation committee. The summary of the international conference "Between Past and Future: The Revolutions of 1989 and the Struggle for Democracy in Central and Eastern Europe" organized by CEU and the University of Maryland, held at CEU between 26th and 28th of March, 1999. A compact cassette documenting the entire event with excerpts from each panel and each speaker of the event. Josef Jařab (President and Rector of CEU) and Gábor Demszky (Mayor of Budapest) open the event, welcome the guests and deliver the introductory remarks. At the first conference panel entitled “1989 and Its Aftermath Through the Eyes of the Media” the participants were American and Hungarian print, television and radio journalist who covered the events in 1989. The panel was chaired by Kati Marton (author and journalist). The introductory remarks for this panel were delivered by former US Ambassador to Hungary Donald Blinken. The speakers were R. W. Apple Jr. (Chief Correspondent, “New York Times”), Barrie Dunsmore (Former Senior Correspondent, ABC News), James Carney (Political Correspondent, “Time Magazine”), Flora Lewis (Senior Columnist, “New York Times” Syndicate), Ambassador Richard Holbrooke (U.S. Special Envoy to Yugoslavia) and György Bolgár (Journalist and Broadcaster, Hungarian Radio). The media panel was followed by a debate between the journalists and the audience, including conference participants István Rév, Timothy Garton Ash and Tamás Gáspár Miklós. Keynote address in the evening was delivered by Ágnes Heller (Philosopher, New School University). The second panel entitled “The Present Significance of the Past” was chaired by Vladimir Tismăneanu (Professor at Maryland University) who was also an organizer and speaker of the conference. Speakers in this panel were Jacques Rupnik (Institute of Political Studies, Paris), G. M. Tamás (Georgetown University), Karol Soltan (University of Maryland), Daniel Chirot (University of Washington) and Sorin Antohi (Academic Pro-Rector at CEU). The third panel was entitled “Winners and Losers in the Great Transformations Since 1989.” The speakers are Adam Michnik (Editor, Gazeta Wyborcza, Poland), Martin Palous (Deputy Foreign Minister of the Czech Republic), Valerie Bunce (Professor at Cornell University), János Kis (Professor at CEU), Jeffrey Isaac (Professor at Indiana University) and Vladimir Tismăneanu (Professor at Maryland University). In the evening, the CEU Bookshop hosted a special celebration launch for “The Revolutions of 1989”, a volume edited by Vladimir Tismăneanu with the contributions of Adam Michnik, Timothy Garton Ash, Jacques Rupnik, Katherine Verdery and Jeffrey Isaac. Before the beginning of the forth panel, entitled “Vulnerabilities of the New Democracies” , its chairman John Lampe (Professor at the University of Maryland) read a letter from Ivan Vejvoda (Director of the Fund for an Open Society Yugoslavia) who could not be present at the conference. Speakers in the panel were Katherine Verdery (Professor at the University of Michigan), Gail Kligman (UCLA), Kazimierz Poznanski (University of Washington), István Rév (Professor at CEU and Director of OSA Archivum) and Miklós Haraszti (Hungarian Writer, Journalist and Professor). After the debate, U.S. Congressman Tom Lantos shared his thoughts on the issue of civility and consensus building in institutions of representational democracy. The fifth and closing panel was entitled "The New Europe: Prospects for Cooperation and Conflict” and was chaired by CEU Professor Alfred Rieber. The speakers were Karen Dawisha (Professor of Political Science at Miami University), Bartlomiej Kaminski (Associate Professor of Government at the University of Maryland), Ivo Banac (Croatian Historian and Politician), Ilya Prizel (Professor at John Hopkins University), Jeffrey Wasserstrom (Professor of History at the University of California), Irena Grudzińska Gross (Polish Historian and Professor) and Chairman Alfred Rieber. Finally, Oxford Scholar Timothy Garton Ash and the President of Hungary Árpád Göncz offer the closing remarks for the three days international conference held at CEU.

Recording of Leon Botstein (President of Bard College, New York, and Music Director, American Symphony Orchestra) giving a public lecture at CEU on April 5, 2001 in Gellner Room. Among the highlights in his talk on "Music in Its Historical Context" were contrasting historical and contemporary experiences: for example, intense modern familiarity via the prism of specific interpretations, "Humphrey Bogart moments" and the change in the music playing abilities of the audiences today as opposed to the "elite amateurism" existing in the 1830s. The lecture is then followed by a commentary of musicologist Judit Frigyesi ( Bar-Ilan University, Collegium Budapest) who elaborated on the problem of music by drawing on the example of Bartók and his modernist milieu in turn-of the-century in Budapest.

Recording of an event organized by CEU to celebrate CEU’s Tenth Anniversary. The Academia String Quartet performs after Leon Botstein’s (President of Bard College and Musical Director, American Symphony Orchestra) third lecture at CEU entitled "Music and Politics in the Twentieth Century." The Academia String Quartet performs: György Kurtág with “ Hommage á Mihály András,” Beethoven with “ String Quartet in C minor” and Amos Elkana with “String Quartet No. 1.” The latter composition was commissioned by CEU and premiered on this occasion.

A three part series about the war on terror. The documentary tries to answer to the question of who is involved in this war and how much. The main protagonist in this series is political theorist Benjamin R. Barber who is a Distinguished Senior Fellow at Demos, president and director of the international NGO CivWorld at Demos, as well as Professor of Political Science Emeritus at Rutgers University. The first part of the series entitled “The temple” focuses on Ground Zero in New York and the people affected by the collapse of the twin towers. Interviews with Tina Brown and Lisa Goldring whose great-grandfather built the World Trade Center, Manuel Castells, Professor of Sociology and Director of the Internet Interdisciplinary Institute at the Open University of Catalonia and Karen Armstrong, a British ex-nun and theologian who writes on the issue of fundamentalism. The second part called “The Mountain” focuses on the Chechen war and the guerrilla fighters, with a particular emphasis on Khozh-Ahmed Noukhaev, considered a freedom fighter by the Chechens and a terrorist by the Russians. The third part, entitled “The Challenge” debates the Washington Consensus, discusses globalization, democracy and capitalism. It focuses on the idea of ‘Open Society’ and debates the possibility of such a society in non-European nations. Interviews with CEU graduates Selima Salamova (Kazakh, UN worker), Aibek Atazin (Kazakh, juridical advisor) and Nadir Burnashev (Russian, bank director) are included here. “The Challenge” contains footage with Peter Lom, representative of the CEU Faculty, Associate Professor and PhD Director at Nationalism Studies Program, visiting Russia and talking about CEU, George Soros and the idea of Open Society. Recording of the 14th CEU Graduation Ceremony held at the Operetta Theater on June 16, 2005 when approximately 450 Master’s degrees, along with 25 doctoral degrees, were awarded. The Master of the Ceremonies was László Mátyás, CEU University Professor of Econometrics and CEU Academic Pro-Rector. Introductory remarks were delivered by CEU President and Rector Yehuda Elkana. The student speaker was Andreea Raluca Maierean, an MA candidate from the Political Science Department. Speaking on behalf of the CEU alumni was Monica Macovei (Legal Studies, 1993), who became the Minister of Justice in Romania. In addition to the awarding of degrees, certificates were given to those who completed the Special Business program, as well as the Roma Access Program. The commencement address was then delivered by Antjie Krog, the South African poet, writer, and journalist, who earlier in the ceremony was awarded the CEU Open Society Prize by the CEU founder, George Soros. The ceremony ends with the performance of the CEU’s choir, moving the tassels to the left and the academic recessional.

Recording of the first discussion of the series called "Transatlantic Dialogues." The series was organized in North America by the CEU New York office and in Budapest by the External Relations Office. The first discussion entitled "Split in the New Europe East and Central European Perceptions of US Foreign Policy and the Conflict with Iraq" took place on April 15, 2003 in the New York office of the Council on Foreign Relations. It focused on the recent split over US foreign policy towards Iraq which occurred between the “old” members of the European Union and the “new” member countries. Topics discussed covered foreign relations, including defense issues, legal and constitutional changes, economic challenges, and fundamental shifts in social, political and cultural structures. The chair of the panel was Donald Blinken (former US Ambassador to Hungary and former Chair of the Board of Trustees of the State University of New York). Keynote speakers were Yehuda Elkana (President and Rector of CEU) and András Simonyi (former Ambassador of the Republic of Hungary to the United States). Commentators were: Thomas Carothers (founder and director of the Democracy and the Rule of Law Project at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace) and Ivan Krastev (Director of the Center for Liberal Strategies in Bulgaria). After the musical interlude performed by Balázs János Junior on piano, George Soros (CEU founder and Chair of the Board of Trustees) delivers the laudatio for Ricardo Lagos (former President of Chile) and awards him with the “CEU Open Society Prize.” The commencement address is then delivered by Ricardo Lagos. The ceremony continues with moving the tassels from left to right as a symbolic gesture for graduating. The concluding remarks are then offered by CEU’s Academic Pro-Rector László Mátyás and CEU’s President and Rector Yehuda Elkana. The academic recessional closes the ceremony.

The Academia String Quartet performs after Leon Botstein’s (President of Bard College and Musical Director, American Symphony Orchestra) third lecture at CEU entitled "Music and Politics in the Twentieth Century." The Academia String Quartet performs: György Kurtág with “ Hommage á Mihály András,” Beethoven with “ String Quartet in C minor” and Amos Elkana with “String Quartet No. 1.” The latter composition was commissioned by CEU and premiered on this occasion.
The tape got damaged thus only the first 2,3 minutes was digitized.

Recording of the international conference "Between Past and Future: The Revolutions of 1989 and the Struggle for Democracy in Central and Eastern Europe" organized by CEU and the University of Maryland, held at CEU between 26th and 28th of March, 1999. The introductory remarks for media panel “1989 and its Aftermath through the Eyes of the Media” are delivered by former US Ambassador to Hungary, Donald Blinken. After giving the presentations, the members of the panel launch into a debate about the legacy of communism and media perception. The speakers are R. W. Apple Jr. (Chief Correspondent, “New York Times”), Barrie Dunsmore (Former Senior Correspondent, ABC News), James Carney (Political Correspondent, “Time Magazine”), Flora Lewis (Senior Columnist, “New York Times” Syndicate), Ambassador Richard Holbrooke (U.S. Special Envoy to Yugoslavia), György Bolgár (Journalist and Broadcaster, Hungarian Radio) and Kati Marton, the Chairman of the conference panel. The media panel is followed by a debate between the journalists and the audience, including conference participants István Rév, Timothy Garton Ash and Tamás Gáspár Miklós.

Recording of the ceremony that marks the official beginning of CEU's 2002/2003 academic year, in the Vigadó Concert Hall on Saturday, October 12, 2002. CEU Pro-Rector Stefan Messmann provides the introductory remarks and welcomes the students as well as Prof. Diana Ürge-Vorsatz, who speaks both as an Alumni (Environmental Sciences & Policy, 1992) and as a Professor at CEU. The speech of Vlatka Butorac, PhD candidate at Legal Studies is followed by the words of the CEU President and Rector, Yehuda Elkana. Next to follow are the speech of the Incoming Student and the musical moment provided by Incoming Student Kinga Szücs. CEU Founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, George Soros offers his welcome speech to the new students and then invites Bálint Magyar, the Hungarian Minister of Education to deliver the Opening Address. Next, Stefan Messmann brings into attention new developments within CEU: the Student Exchange Program with BART College and Princeton University and the development of the CEU Business School. Ferenc Pártos (Chief Executive Officer) speaks about the Business School and the MBA degree it offers. The “Plaque of Appreciations” for the 10 years of service in the university is offered by Yehuda Elkana and Stefan Messmann to János Bak (Professor at the Department of Medieval Studies), László Bruszt (Professor at the Department of Political Science) and Gábor Klaniczay (Permanent Fellow of Collegium Budapest - Institute for Advanced Study and Professor at the Department of Medieval Studies at the CEU). The fourth “Plaque of Appreciations” goes to Prof. Susanne Zimmerman who could not attend the ceremony. The ceremony is followed by a small reception at the University. Various Ambassadors, Hungarian Senior Officials, Rectors and Deans from other universities are among the participants.

Recording of CEU’s 13th Graduation Ceremony, held in the Operetta Theater on June 17, 2004 when more than 450 students receive degrees, both Master’s and doctoral. The ceremony starts with the academic procession and with the words of the Master of Ceremonies and Academic Pro-Rector László Mátyás. The introductory remarks are delivered by President and Rector of CEU Yehuda Elkana. After the speeches of the Alumni and the Representative Student, the Heads of the CEU Departments, CEU Rector Yehuda Elkana and CEU founder George Soros confer the degrees and offer congratulations to the graduates. Next, the representative of the Student Council, presents the award for the most supportive and helpful administrative employer of the university - “Best Administrator” is awarded to Richard Kartosonto (Student Life Officer). CEU founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees George Soros introduces Commissioner Emma Bonino of the European Commission and awards her with the CEU Open Society Prize. She then delivers a speech. Finally, the commencement address is delivered by Mark Malloch Brown (UNDP Administrator) on "Factors of Freedom." Concluding remarks are given by Yehuda Elkana and László Mátyás. CEU’s choir performs in front of the audience and the ceremony ends with the academic recessional.
