Contents/Summary

Summary
Following a general description of the Jewish population in Warsaw between 1918-39, deals with the fate of the Jews during the war. Describes forms of indirect extermination of the Jews between October 1939-June 1942, such as the conditions of life in the ghetto. Discusses, also, aspects of accommodation and resistance of the Jews to this way of life - Jewish organizations and mutual help, legal and illegal systems of education, cultural and religious life, the system of Jewish administration, informal self-administration and its conflict with the Judenrat, documentation and archival activities (Ringelblum's "Oneg Shabbat"), the underground press, and reactions in the ghetto to information about the extermination of Jews in Chełmno, Bełżec, Sobibór, and other camps. Deals with the deportations between spring 1942-March 1943, until just before the uprising. (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism)
