a| A series of five newsreel films produced in 2006 and 2007 centered on the activities RESF 13 network (Education Without Borders Network, 13th district of France: Bouches-du-Rhône). Created in 2004, the RESF fights side by side with families who live in France and have children going to school, to obtain the residence permits and legal status. The network has become particularly active since June 2006, when the Interior Minister, then Nicolas Sarkozy, passed a bill to give legal status to certain undocumented families residing in France. 1. On November 11th 2006, Mr. Douibi, residing in France with no legal status and father of two (of whom one born in France) is driven to Marseilles airport to be deported. The RESF 13 becomes active. 2. On November 25th 2006, the RESF 13 is organizing at the town hall of the 13th and 14th districts of Marseilles, a ‘sponsorship’ ceremony where French citizens take children of undocumented parents under their protection. 3. On February 7th 2007, on the initiative of the theatre company “La part du pauvre” and the RESF 13, a true-false identity check is organized at the Saint-Charles train station. 4. On Sunday December 10th 2006, a silent march in memory of Kazim Kustul is organized from the Porte d’Aix to the detention centre. On December 1st, Kazim Kustul, a Turkish young man aged 22, had been found dead in his “bedroom” at the Canet detention centre in Marseilles. 5. On February 28th 2007, Sedat Tastan, aged 19, of Kurdish origin and living in Marseille with no residence permit is put in the Canet detention centre in Marseille. He goes on a hunger strike. On Thursday March 15th, the RESF 13 hears that he is going to be deported the next day, even though a first attempt to deport him was defeated a few days earlier. A rally is called for in front of the detention centre that evening.
