- In 2011, vigilantes terrorized the local Roma population and marched the streets for weeks in the small Hungarian village of Gyöngyöspata. Since then, uniformed patrols by paramilitary groups have been banned, yet private vigilante patrols have continued in another village called Magyarbánhegyes. The "Hungarian Association of Civilian Guards for a Better Future," linked to the radical right-wing party Jobbik, claims that they patrol to protect civilians, however, local Roma think otherwise, and fear that the police will not protect them.
