a| The Children Beyond Chernobyl
a| Chernobyl was the world's worst nuclear accident, affecting the lives of 7 million people in Russia, Belarus and the Ukraine. More than half of them were children. In spite of the initial secrecy and denial it is now known they were exposed to the highest levels of radiation in the history of the atomic age. The documentary follows Adi Roche and her team of Irish volunteers on a journey to remote and inaccessible mental asylums where young and old are locked up together; orphanages where abused and abandoned children live, despairing lives and hospitals where operations are carried out without anesthesia. But the documentary is also filled with moments of hope and joy as children - some rescued from brutalized and abusive backgrounds and others with severe physical and mental illnesses - are being given new lives with the help of Irish aid programs.
