a| Camilo Mejía, an emigrant from Nicaragua, signed an eight-year contract with the National Guard in 1995. In his last year of service, Camilo’s unit was mobilized for the Iraq war and stationed in the Sunni triangle. His growing doubts about the purpose of the war led to Camilo not reporting for duty after two weeks’ home leave. Thus Camilo Mejía became the first official conscientious objector of the Iraq war. On the other hand, Fernando Suarez del Solar lost his son Jesus in the Iraq invasion and is now holding the U.S. Army and government accountable. Jesus was the first Mexican to die in the war. In his grief Fernando starts the Guerrero Azteca Peace Project and becomes a peace activist. The filmmaker contrasts Camilo’s story with that of Fernando Suarez del Solar and creates a poetic and truthful portrayal of two people who oppose popular opinion and who now — as a convicted deserter and as a father looking for truth — feel a longing to get back to themselves and find peace.
