Contents/Summary

Summary
While making preparations for a film and theatre production about French immigrants in the National Theatre de Chaillot of Paris, Árpád Schilling encounters difficulties. He chooses two Romanian Roma siblings as the main characters who, however, are refused permission to participate, even though they have been living in France for many years. At the last moment the director rewrites the script, and asks someone he knows from a previous project, a Hungarian Roma, "Marci" Andor Balázs, to stand in for the children. This change delays the production, and while the director is busy trying to meet deadlines, Marci begins to doubt his decision to participate in the show. His greatest concern is that by telling his own story, he could unintentionally become a spokesperson for others, and would also have to account for something he is still in the process of discovering: what it means to be a Roma in Hungary today.
