Summary
In the Spring of 2014, following the annexation of Crimea by Russia, groups of armed pro-Russian rebels in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk seized a local administrative building, expelled Ukrainian officials and raised their own flag. They eventually called for a referendum and declared independence from Kiev. Director Anthony Butts first came to Donetsk in April 2014, where he met the people attempting to create a 'new country' and over a two year period he documented the origins and evolution of the Donetsk People’s Republic in East Ukraine. As the individuals building the city begin to welcome him into their lives, he accesses a personal perspective on what is happening in the region.
