Contents/Summary
- Summary
- The story centers on an eccentric family of Soviet engineers, who for generations have worked on top military projects. The film takes off in 1962, when the youngest generation is assigned to build the most advanced atomic warship. The family itself is an aggregate portrait of the Soviet technical intelligentsia – well-educated servants of the regime, who do not always hide their critical opinions, but at the same time enjoy abundant privileges and exist under permanent supervision by the secret services. The master plot, revealed to the stunned family at the end of the film, is that their whole existence and work were only a diversionary project to distract the attention of Western spies from the real engineering breakthrough of the Soviet Union.
