a| 20 years after the genocide in which almost a million Tutsis and Hutus were murdered, the government contends that ethnicity no longer plays a role in contemporary Rwanda. However, in the backstage of a football match between implacable rivals – the army club APR and the popular civilian club Rayon Sport – traumatic memories and suppressed tensions come to the surface. In general, the APR fans are mainly Tutsi, while Rayon enjoys a lot of support among the Hutus. This division is not exclusive, but it does reveal how the Rwandan population got used to keeping silent about many unresolved issues that remain two decades after the genocide. The football competition transcends the limits of sports as players from different backgrounds share their own thoughts about the country’s past and present and the reality of the reconciliation process is exposed.
