a| The Sea Point Promenade on the Cape Town waterfront was one of the earliest desegregated areas in post-apartheid South Africa. Under apartheid the public pools and promenade at Sea Point were reserved for whites only. Today, this gorgeous section of Cape Town hosts a lively mix of people that epitomizes the country’s diversity. François Verster reveals the nuances of a vibrant community in flux: the older white woman dismayed at the changes on the promenade; the teenage boys who come from the neighborhood nearby to enjoy the pool; the black alcoholic philosopher who sleeps on the beach; the white councilman, married to a “colored” woman, who tries to maintain peace and order in the city. Using largely cinematic vignettes the film explores issues of belonging, integration, nostalgia, happiness and identity in an ex-white South African neighborhood.
