a| The ethnic composition of Baranya County is extremely diverse. Hungarians, Gypsies, Germans, Croats, Serbs and Greeks live together. The number of Roma is also extremely high compared to the total population. Nearly 10,000 gypsies live in Pécs, almost half of them are young people aged 15-26. About 40% of Roma students still do not complete elementary school until the age of 14. Currently, 20% of Roma students attend a high school that gives high school diploma, compared to 70% of the total population.
One of the main keys to improving their quality of life, reducing the high unemployment rate, and thus reducing exclusion and prejudice, can be to obtain a degree and education. In Pécs and Baranya, more and more institutions and non-governmental organizations want to contribute to improving the situation. Perhaps the best known and most significant of these is the Gandhi High School. The stated aim of the school is to train open-minded Roma people who are receptive to knowledge and science and who are attached to their people and language.
The history of Gandhi certainly justifies their goals.
