- Vámosszabadi was a peaceful, wealthy village in Hungary until a sudden event disturbed the tranquility of the settlement: a new refugee camp was established just kilometers away from their border. The villagers reacted strongly and started protests. Soon however a new layer of the conflict emerged between the older inhabitants who had lived all their lives in the village and the younger, wealthier newcomers. Reconciliation seems impossible as the settlement’s sympathies separate with the old-timers leaning towards accepting the camp and its residents around the village while the newer residents see “strangers walking the streets” as a genuine risk to the security of the village. A micro study on tolerance, migration and globalization.
