a| In 1956 Sudan was supposed to gain independence from Great Britain and Egypt and become an independent entity. However, it turned out to be too much for such a diverse land inhabited by 600 ethnic groups and fighting ensued. In 2005 a peace agreement was signed stating terms for an independence referendum to be held in the South in January 2011. This referendum would allow the people to decide whether they wanted their own state or whether they preferred to continue in the union with the North. David Marpiny Manyok, Major of Juba Police shares his reflections, memoirs from the war, and visions for the future. “New Sudan” shows South Sudan and the plight of its people around the time of the 2011 referendum.
