Contents/Summary

Summary
This documentary film is about two young girls, Elena and Anna, whose friendship stands the test of time in the midst of war, hate, cultural and religious differences. It is set during World War II in the capital of Macedonia, Skopje, when Yugoslavia falls under the Fascist regime, and Eastern Macedonia is occupied by the Bulgarian Nazis. Elena tells the story of her childhood friend Anna (from a Jewish family) whom she met when she was in the sixth grade. Through a blood mixing ritual, Elena and Anna become best friends. However, the war breaks out and Anna's and Elena's lives change forever. Elena's father is forced to work for the Nazi's, but he willingly turns Anna in to be deported. “Soul Mates” is a reminder of the Sephardic Jewish influence on European history, as characters confront power relations and come to terms with the meaning of justice.
