520    In 1949, when the Chinese Civil War ended, the KMT withdrew to Taiwan, but the last batch of the Nationalist troops from Yunnan hid in the jungle of the Thailand-Burma mountains. In 1961, the United Nations ruled that the troops were to retreat and be moved back to Taiwan but a secret command was issued from Chiang Kai-Shek, ordering them to stay and wait for an opportunity to counterattack. Fifty years of waiting have gone and they have become nothing but an isolated troop in northern Thailand.
